The last season of Game of Thrones is nearly here (*screams*), and the end sure feels bittersweet. Much as we’d like to know how everything turns out, we’re sad that the door will be closing on the gorgeous Seven Kingdoms once and for all - which, despite all the wars, death and destruction, actually looks like a pretty sweet place to live. With its sweeping forests, snowy plains and golden cities making up much of the landscape, the only thing it’s really missing is the internet... and, of course, our beloved games.
This is a shame on more than one level. Not only does it mean that we could never live there (as pretty as it is), we also think that the Game of Thrones characters have really missed out. There are so many amazing video games out there that we’re sure they’d enjoy - and slugging down in a beanbag chair with a controller in-hand would totally help them to decompress after a long and hard day of trying to kill each other.
But which titles do we think would suit each character, exactly? We took some time to figure it out
You only need to play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for ten minutes to see that it has Arya’s name written all over it. The vast role-playing game follows Alexios or Kassandra (whichever character you choose) as they quest through Greece, fighting their enemies while trying to restore their fractured and broken family. Sounds familiar? It certainly will to Arya - and we reckon she’d be great at the stealth elements in the game, too. Excellent.
A tragic, morally-complex character who spends his days riding around the wilderness on a horse? We could easily be describing both Arthur and Jaime, here. The parallels between the tortured knight from Game of Thrones and the principal character of Red Dead Redemption 2 run pretty closely, and we think that Jaime might get a kick out of finding common ground with this complicated cowboy. Buckle up.
We mean, duh. There probably isn’t a more famous dragon-based game in the world than Skyrim, so really, what else could we choose for the Mother of Dragons herself? If you ignore the eensy, teensy detail that you really should kill the dragons in this game (a technicality), it’s perfect for her - she could just focus on the side quests while admiring her murderous, fire-breathing children from a distance. A mother’s love knows no bounds.
Fighting horrendous zombies and their ilk in a barren, post-apocalyptic world is just a day in the life for Jon Snow - which makes him perfectly prepared for the challenges presented by Metro Exodus. With mutants running amok in the arctic wilderness (Exodus’ answer to White Walkers... *gulp*), humans ready to betray you at every turn and a lonely atmosphere, this game runs pretty darn closely to the challenges the Lord Commander faces after breakfast. Game on, Jon.
Our favourite Lannister might not have a lot of brawn, but he sure has a brain. And a big one, at that. It would take a puzzle game replete with twists and turns to satisfy him: which is why we think The Talos Principle would be right at the top of his list. Set in an idyllic world with an insidious underbelly, this philosophical adventure requires that you make difficult decisions and see past the surface of things to uncover the truth... two things that Tyrion happens to excel at. Anybody know how to get a PC to House Lannister..?
There’s no denying that the queen of the Seven Kingdoms has a lot of bloodlust (and it would be great if she had an outlet for that other than her innocent civilians). In Mortal Kombat 11, the feisty femme fatale could exercise her violent side by beating up her enemies in amazing graphical quality, without ever having to leave her royal games room (or put down her wine). The only snag is that she’d have to wait until April 23rd for the game to come out, and we’re not sure she can last more than one week without sending somebody to their deaths. Hurry up, NetherRealm Studios.
With season eight quite literally set to be a fight to the death, we reckon the Game of Thrones characters would have a lot of enthusiasm for one of the battle royale titles sweeping the globe right now. Whether they’d be throwing grenades at each other in PUBG, building fortresses in Fortnite or working as a team with their comrades in Apex Legends, we’re sure they’d probably love nothing more than the chance to vanquish each other on-screen before attempting to seize the Seven Kingdoms once and for all...
